Rodney stared straight ahead of him. If someone’s eyes stopped on him, they would just assume that he was looking at his computer screen trying to do some research on the topic of ‘The importance of writing across the curriculum’; however, that was not at all the case. Yes, the internet was frozen on a chart that showed what courses had WAC as their description. And yes, he had a few writing across the curriculum books opened to the left of him with words scribbled in the margins from disrespectful people who had borrowed those same books from the library. So, it was a fair assumption for him to actually be focusing on his research project, but no, his eyes were focused elsewhere. Past the computer screen straight ahead of him was a young woman stocking shelves in the 1900’s section of the library. He’d been watching her for a while now, and when she had glanced over in his direction he had quickly moved his eyes back to his screen.
Rodney looked away leaning back and slouching down into his chair. He had just realized how stalkerish he was being right now. He didn’t understand why he couldn’t just walk over to her and talk to her. Maybe ask her what her name was. Be all cool and stuff. She seemed like the type of girl he would normally date. Although he wasn’t looking for anyone at the moment, it was always nice to get to know people. If only he wasn’t such an awkward person when it came to being social. Rodney sighed as he fidgeted with the eraser of the pencil resting on one of the open books. His eyes glanced over at her once again. That’s it, he had to go talk to her. What’s the worst that could happen?
Rodney stood up and headed over to her shoving his hands in his lighter faded blue jeaned pockets as he did. Just say hello, introduce yourself, and ask her what her name is. And then just let it go from there. How hard can that be? It’ll be a piece of cake. He took a deep breath and stopped next to the cart with all of the books she was shelving. Here it goes. “Hi there,” he said with the most welcoming smile he could conjure up.

Merry may have been a librarian but it didn't mean that she dressed frumpy by any stretch of the imagination. Her heels clicked on the floor as she moved and her rose perfume teased the senses as she worked on shelving books in the library. Today she had decided to wear a lightweight dress with a bit of color because it made her smile and was just one of those colors that stood out in a library. She was completely oblivious to the guy in the computer lab checking her out. It may have been close to where she was, but it wasn't her job to police the computer users; that was what they paid security guards for. Pausing in her work she looked at the young man that addressed her. She brushed the lock of hair out of her eyes and smiled warmly, "Hello, how can I help you, Sir?" she asked him warmly. She paused in her shelving to see if he had anything he needed her eyes glancing at him to see if his body language would give any clue to how she could assist him. She wondered if he was from one of the local covens and if he was coming to explore the deep stacks where magical tomes were kept. He'd have to prove he had the right credentials for that. Knowing her luck he was probably looking for the latest edition of D & D or Warhammer 40K. There were tons of college geeks into that. And some were actual football players. This guy looked like he could bench press two of her. He was huge but cute. She blinked slightly and stopped wool gathering. 'More time listening and less time time drooling.' she told herself as she waited for the young man to speak.

He knew what he wanted to say, he really did. He had been practicing it on the way over from the computer lab. But when she turned to him and brushed a piece of hair out of her eye, Rodney completely froze. And then she had to go on and call him ‘sir’ which caught him off guard. Did he really look that old? Or was she just being polite because that was her job? And if that was the case, when she glanced his way a few times before he had walked up to her, was she even looking at him or was she just looking around and he hoped she was looking his way? After all, there were a few kids just running around the library. That was probably it. Shit, why didn’t he think about that before he walked up to her? If she was at all interested, wouldn’t she say something else to him? Like just a ‘hello’ maybe? What was the difference between her saying that and what she actually said? The questions kept swirling around in his head as he stared at her. What was he doing? She probably thought he was a freak right now. He had to say something. “Uh…” he paused scratching his head, “….you know, yeah, I had some questions about search engines here at the library.” Of course, it was here at the library. Why was he being so stupid right now? Too bad Axel hadn’t been there to do some coaching before he decided to walk up to her and make a fool out of himself. He had no intension of asking her any questions about his research. He already knew just about everything there was to know about searching in the library databases. So, what the hell was he going to do now? Probably think of some lame ass question to ask her about researching. He was actually contemplating on just walking away and telling her never mind. But if Axel was here, he would tell him to just keep going and recover from his awkwardness. “Yeah, my computer is over there. If you could just help me do a search for something that’d be great.” He gave her a smile. He doubted it was possible to recover, but it was worth a try, right?

Merry noticed he was a bit ackward and tried to reassure him, "Well my name is Merry and I'll see what I can do. You go to the local university right?" she asked him as she walked over to where he indicated. Her heels clicking when she went from carpet to tile. Her dress swished with the sway of her hips and she looked over at the machine.
"Well let me see. You've done google...." she paused and realized with a quick glance this guy had everything he needed. He was just making an excuse to talk to her. She looked at him and smiled. "If you come with me I'm sure we can get you something that will help." she moved away from the public terminals and then when she was certain that he wasn't in public view she put her hands on her hips, "Okay, I gotta ask. What gives. You don't need my help. Was there something you wanted to ask me specifically?"
She smiled at him, she didn't appear to be too put out. Her hip cocked just so so she can make sure no one is eavesdropping on them. "I am flattered that you came to say hello though." she admitted shyly.

When she told him her name, Rodney was a bit disappointed. Now what was he going to ask her? He hadn't thought that far ahead. But she asked him a question now, which gave him hope that maybe she would take control of the situation. He was normally very good at taking control of a situation and staying calm, but when it came to people he didn't know and those awkward conversations that took place during the 'getting to know you' stages there was nothing calm about it. "Uh, yeah. A freshman actually," he answered as he quickly followed after her. Oh crap. She was already heading to the computer lab where she would find that he already had the correct search engine up on his screen.
And just as Rodney suspected, Merry knew right away that no help was needed. He wasn't sure what to say. How could he justify pulling her away from her work? But instead of walking off rolling her eyes which is what he thought she would do, she asked him to come with her, and she led him away from the lab.
Once they were out of public hearing range, Merry put her hands on her hips, a gesture Rodney was quite familiar with. His mother would do that any time she was annoyed with Rodney. But Merry didn't seem annoyed at all. She had a smile on her face. And when she asked if there was something specific he wanted to ask her, he wasn't exactly sure how to answer. Yeah I've been watching you for the past half hour, and I think your hot and want to take you out. For some reason, he didn't think that answer would fly. But when she told him that she was flattered that he had said hello to her, it boosted his confidence enough for him to go with something. "Yeah, you looked a little bored over there in the 1900's section. Figured i'd distract you for a few minutes. I'm Rodney by the way. I've seen you around here a lot." He chuckled, "I'm not gonna lie, I've been trying to get up the nerve to actually come and talk to you." Rodney threw up his arms. "And here I am." He dropped his arms to his sides and gave her a smile. "Nice to meet you Merry." He seemed to think that went well. But didn't that always happen? You think something went great and then you find out later that the girl called the police and filed a restraining order on you? Well, at least that is what he saw in the movies.

Tilting her head she smiled at him, "I didn't go to school here. You'll have to keep me up to date with things." she grinned at him, "I don't want to sound like a total loser." she laughed softly, her eyes sparkling.
Hearing his comments and how laid back he was she grinned, "I don't bite. I like talking to people. Its one of the reasons I became a librarian. Its really nice to meet you, Rodney." she brushed her hair out of her eyes. "I can't talk on the clock for too long. But its really great getting to know you at least a little bit." she smiled and looked up at him. She blushed crimson as she looked at him. She couldn't believe she was being flirted with.

Good, good. She was talking. He was talking. Everyone was talking. He was starting to think that he had made a wise choice when deciding to approach her. But then she had to go on to tell him that she didn’t couldn’t talk on the clock. He tried not to let his disappointment show. He wasn’t sure if it was just her way of trying to get rid of him, or her boss really was that strict. Normally he would have just leaned more towards his first explanation to her cutting him short, but when she began to blush, he was fairly certain that wasn’t the case at all. And this actually worked perfectly. Maybe she had just said that to set him up to possibly ask him out. And now that he realized that she at least had some interest in him, things would come out a bit more smoothly than before. “Well, what time do you get out of here? I mean if you’re up for getting to know me even more?” He asked. He hoped she didn’t take that in any way sexual. He didn’t mean it like that, but Axel probably would have laughed about it meaning it could have been taken sexual.

Merry beamed as she noticed that Rodney had the wherewithall to ask her if he could meet with her. "I work latee tonight but I get off at eight if you happen to be around maybe we can talk over coffee." she said quietly as she looked at him, her cheeks flushed, "I'm not...well I've not...you know. Just so you know. I don't want you to get the wrong impression about me."
She sighed and groaned, "That was like the lamest acceptance to get to know you ever wasn't it? I'm such a dork." she laughed softly and looked up at him with twinkling eyes, "Thank you for asking me. I appreciate it. I just wish work wasn't so strict." she rolled her eyes a bit and winked at him.

Rodney paused more to yell at himself inside his head than anything else. Yep, she had definitely taken what he had said in the context he didn’t mean for it to go. “No, no. I didn’t mean that at all.” He said shaking his head for more emphasis. “I just meant to talk and get to know me better. And I’d love to hear more about you too. Not that I wouldn’t,” Rodney hesitated. No that was wrong. He shouldn’t have said that either. She’d probably think he had those intentions in mind. “I mean eventually, after dating for a while that is what would happen I suppose, but not that I’m thinking that far ahead,” Rodney hesitated once again. Well, now she was probably going to think he was too fast. Oh my gosh, this being social thing was just getting ridiculous. He stopped talking completely, closed his eyes inhaling deeply and the exhaling slowly. “Okay, Merry, I’d love to go for coffee after you get off at 8 where we can chat and get to know each other. It’d be great to have a friend that isn’t at the university.” He gave her a soft smile hoping that he had recovered from his babbling mess. “And no strings attached at all. Just two people going out to get to know each other where ‘talking on the clock’ isn’t an issue.”
And when she mentioned her supposed lame acceptance to hang out with him, he had to laugh. “Are you kidding me? Did you not just hear the horribleness that just came out of my mouth? Believe me, there was absolutely nothing wrong with what you said.”

Merry grew even more scarlet at his comments about having sex. She was just so not ready to go there. With her cousin's having issues and needing the occasional shoulder, or in ones case the chance to get cleaned up and relax it was just too hard to date. She was paying off her student loans to be sure but all of that happened because she was in the right place at the right time. She'd been working for the library since she was 10 and by the time she was done with library school the directorship had opened up. Given how much supernatural stuff was going on most non supernatural librarians had an instinctive aversion to working here. "I understand...I'm not...well I've never....I've got a lot of family issues I'm trying to sort out so my place ends up being more the family hang out then my place." she admitted. "And my dad is like epically old school if he thought someone was trying to push things he'd probably pull out the boy gun or something..." Better to warn Rodney before they even got to the dating stage. Her life was complicated.
"Well that's good that you don't mind me being a dork. I mean after my mom was killed my dad got super protective so dating wasn't something he encouraged. He was always afraid...well thats...nevermind I'm sorry I'm babbling....you don't need to know about that its..." she shook her head and bit her lip...."Like I said its complicated..." she exhaled softly and muttered lamely, "This is my family. I found it, all on my own. Is little, and broken, but still good. Yeah, still good. " she shook her head and grimaced, "God you probably think I'm a freak...I'm sorry." She ducked her head, 'Way to go, Merry. You can't even talk to a guy without making him think you've got some mental disorder.' she bit her lip and her hair hid part of her face.

Rodney tried not to wince at the idea of getting shot by someone’s dad. He was never really the pushing type. When it came to those more personal experiences, he felt that it was a mutual decision to get to that level. Although he was probably coming off as someone who only had that outcome in mind. But that was just because he was nervous. He couldn’t help it if Merry made him like that. But he couldn’t blame it on her at all. He would get nervous around anyone he had to confront like this including a possible father in the future. But he didn’t want to think about that at the moment.
Rodney watched Merry as she uncomfortably began to talk a little about her family. He could tell it was a touchy subject right away; however, he thought it was a bit strange for her to be open with him so quickly. Not exactly open open. She wasn’t telling him deep dark secrets about her family, but the stuff that she was saying wasn’t a normal ice breaker topic. Although him accidentally bringing up sex wasn’t the best conversation starter either.
Rodney wasn’t sure what he wanted to say to her though. He definitely didn’t think she was crazy at all by what she was saying. Maybe she was just as nervous as he was. Or maybe she just needed someone to talk to about the things that she was mentioning about her family. Either way, Rodney would be willing to listen. He smiled at her. “No, not a freak at all. I’d actually love to hear everything.” Rodney turned gesturing back to where he was seated at the computer lab just before he decided to confront her. “I’ll be waiting over there for you. Just let me know when you get off work, and we can go get a coffee.” There was no way he’d be able to focus on any of his research assignment now that all he was going to be able to think about was Merry until 8.

Her eyes lit up and she beamed at him, "Really? Oh thats great really great. I'm so glad I met you. I just....well my family tends to come around a lot and sometimes things get intense if they get worried. My cousin Tana sees himself as the protector of the family when my dad isn't around so he's likely to to pop up at some point. The rest of my cousins are girls so they aren't likely to be a problem." she brushed her hand through her hair shyly.
She nodded her head and relaxed, "That's great. I hope you aren't too bored. I'll reset your time on your computer so you're not totally bored while you wait." she murmured at him and backed away gently as if she really didn't want to go but knew she had to go. She turned back and looked at him, "There is this new restaurant that makes Italian food. Do you want to go with me?" the offer was shy and she blushed all the way through it.
