new york city. the city of hopes and dreams, or so they say. really it seemed like the city of lost hope and broken dreams, but who was she to judge. it wasn't like she had seen the entire united states, maybe this really was the city of dreams. new york city was definitely not a forgiving city though, that much was completely obvious. she had been in the city for a grand total of four days and so far she had spent all four of those days trying to find a place to stay, some things to do that would earn her a little cash and some food. at twenty one she was independent but she struggled, she had always struggled and felt that she always would. nothing in this life was free and no one was going to hand things out to you. she had learned at a very young age that people don't care about anyone other than themselves. no one loved her, no one ever had. her entire life had been one big storm that had no end in sight.
she made her way through the streets of the big city. looking like everyone else in her faded blue jeans, dark blue t-shirt and black jacket with black tennis shoes. maybe she could find a job in one of the little shops or something. just enough to get by during her stay in the city. she never tended to stay in one place for too long. maybe a few months, give or take a little. the longer she stayed in one place the more likely it was that she would get caught. she had put herself as far from romania as she could at this point but still she felt that it might not be enough. ana was one of those people that went through life constantly looking over her shoulder. she felt like someone was always watching her, always following her. that was just part of living a life on the run like she had been for the last three years. her and two others like her.
as she passed an alley that she assumed was empty something caught her eye. it was a guy and he had a gun held up to a woman who was crying. so many people were just walking by, unaware of what was happening. ana turned down the alley and as she got closer hollered to the guy "Hey buddy, why don't you find someone your own size to threaten?" she asked in a mocking tone. when the guy turned his gun to her she simply smirked a little at him. he told her to freeze, stop where she was, just turn and walk away or he would kill her too. she set down her bag and then with smirking smile replied "Bring it." the guy fired his gun at her but she easily dodged the bullet and moved up beside him. "Surprise" she whispered in his ear as she punched him in the throat and then aimed a well placed knee at his groin. as she stared to crumble to the ground she let a shoe connect with his head and knock him out. she wasn't going to kill him, this time.
she looked over at the woman and nodded slowly at her "Stay out of alleys" she said lightly and then turned and grabbed her bag before walking away. she hadn't gotten more than maybe twenty steps before she started to feel shaky and queasy. she knew this feeling. she looked around to find somewhere, anywhere to duck into for a little while. somewhere that wasn't too crowded. she spotted a small shop and made her way inside. once there she found a secluded corner with a cushioned chair and sat down, pulling her knees to her chest. her body started shaking, convulsing really. she bowed her head onto her knees and tried to concentrate on breathing as the seizure racked through her body. she hoped that no one would come across her like this because she didn't want to answer any questions. she just wanted this to pass and to find some way to get her hands on the medication that she needed to control the seizures. words; ### muse; high notes; <3 tags; lily outfit; lyrics; all alright - fun. credits; template by twilightbright @ caution

In the three months she'd been hunting in NYC she'd not only rid the world of a few vampires and werewolves but put the occasional criminal in jail for trying to rob or otherwise assault someone. Because of this, however she needed to get clothing from time to time. Fighting had this habit of tearing good clothes if you landed wrong. She sighed softly and was looking at a nice black sweater when she noticed a girl convulsing out of the corner of her eye. Pausing in her actions she made her way over to the isolated corner and knelt down in front of the other woman trying to help her with her seizure and making sure she didn't choke on her own tongue. Glancing about for medication, or a medialert bracelet she found none.
'Lovely...' she thought to herself as she waited for the seizure to pass. She wasn't even sure if the girl had health insurance. In this economy it wasn't a given and considering she had no anti seizure medication it was quite likely she had no health care as well. Closing her eyes briefly she waited for the seizure to pass. There was definitely something not right here and she didn't trust the normal routes for a case like this. Reaching around she looked for a wallet with identification and found an ID Ana it said. Ana Petrova. Well that was a start at least. She put everything back so as not to scare the young woman and smiled as she realized she was coming out of the seizure.
"Miss, do you need an ambulance? That was quite a grand mal." she said gently as she moved back and offered a hand to the young woman, "My name is Lily, Lily Collins. I saw you were in distress so figured I'd lend a hand." she offered with a polite smile.

ana could feel the seizure hitting its peak. that meant that it would be over soon enough. hitting the peak was always the worst part and then from there it really only got better. ana didn't even realize that someone had approached her. she was too focused on the fact that her mind was on overdrive while she seized. she didn't even notice that the same someone that had approached her had also taken her wallet and looked at her identification card. as she started to slip back into reality and the world came back into view she jumped slightly at the sight of a girl in front of her. the girl appeared to be close to her own age or so. ana looked at her confusedly for a moment and then realized that she had asked her if she wanted an ambulance. ana quickly shook her head. "No, please don't" she said softly and shifted herself to a complete upright position. "I don't like doctors" she added, so try and make an excuse for not wanting the ambulance called.
the girl then introduced herself, her name was lily, lily collins. ana never did understand why people always introduced themselves by first and last name. ana never did. of course right now she didn't know that this girl already knew her first and last name. "Ana" she replied and then added "Yeah, I have always had these. I usually have some medication to help with them but I ran out. Sorry you had to be a witness to that" she replied with a small, half smile. she could only imagine that this whole situation probably seemed pretty odd to this girl, this lily collins. seeing a girl having insane seizures isn't exactly what one usually sees when they enter a clothing store. which reminded ana that she was, in fact, sitting in a public clothing store. this was all kinds of embarrassing.
"I should be alright now though, so you shouldn't worry" ana replied with that same half smile. she wanted this girl to believe that ana was perfectly fine. ana didn't want to explain where the seizures had come from or why she got them. she didn't want to talk about why she didn't have medication or why she had chosen a public place to have her seizure.

"Okay, I won't call the doctor then." she nodded her dark haired head in agreement and looked over at the other woman worriedly, "I can see where they would get annoying." she said gently as she looked at her with sympathy. She hated hospitals, that was where her mother and uncle had died and she never felt comfortable there. It was like a place to put people in and forget about them and it just didn't sit well with her.
"Nothing to be sorry about, I used to have a friend with epilepsy so its nothing to worry about." she assured her. Her friend Helen would randomly have seizures although after a while she and Lily could almost tell when one was about to happen. Call it a weird attunement with Helen, but Lily could just see the body reaction before it happened. "We could call your doctor and see about getting you a temporary dosage of your medication till it gets refilled if you like." she said with a shrug of her shoulders as she brushed her own straight hair out of her eyes.
"Of course you are." she nodded firmly. "My friend Helen used to have them too. Its nothing to worry about it just happens from time to time. Did you want to go somewhere and sit down for a bit? There is a tea house right next door. Normally I wouldn't be so forward but I know seizures can be pretty draining and someplace quiet afterwards can help." she added with a gentle smile as she waited till Ana felt well enough to rise. She was in no hurry and wasn't going to grill the girl.

so this girl had some experience in the seizure department. that was good luck for ana because that meant she wouldn't really need to explain to this girl why she was having seizures. epilepsy, sure that would be her new excuse. she had epilepsy. "Ahh yeah, that is what I have too" she replied lightly. it was nice to have a name for her disorder, a name that would make people just shrug and leave her alone. if she had a reason for her seizures then people would probably be less likely to think that she needed to get help for them. people that could tell you what was wrong with them had usually gone to a doctor and were being treated. perfect. she mentally thanked the girl for giving her a name for her disease.
when the girl mentioned calling her doctor ana had to think of a response for that. she hesitated. "Well umm, I am just visiting here so I don't actually have a doctor. My bags got lost on the flight over here and my pills were with them. Rotten luck really but I figure I can just deal until I go back home" she replied casually. that was a good back story. airlines were notorious for losing bags, or so she hoped. she had actually never flown legally on a plane before. she had always just stowed away in the cargo hold. flying took money and money was something she didn't have a lot of.
a tea house. that sounded nice. she had a little bit of spare cash. she could go for something to eat and something warm to drink. "Yeah a tea house sounds great" ana replied with a smile and pulled herself to her feet. she felt a little shaky still but that was probably because she couldn't remember the last time she had eaten a full meal. she usually just got something little here and there, something to keep her alive. she reached down and grabbed her bag before smiling at lily and saying "Lead the way."

Lily listened to Ana and the way she said her first sentence had Lily wary. It sounded as if she was looking for an excuse. "Yeah, well we can always see about getting your luggage back if you need it." she added as she waited for Ana to get a little more stable on her feet. She straightened herself up a bit more and smiled, "I'm sure some tea will help. It always soothes me." she added gently.
Once Ana was able to move Lily lead the way next door ordering a chamomile honey vanilla blend for herself and then waiting for Anna to pick from the selection of loose leaf teas that were brewed in house. "You seem as new to the city as I am." She added to the girl, "What brought you here?" she asked as she waited for her tea to cool before drinking it. "I came here for a fresh start but I guess that didn't happen like I hoped. Life had other plans." she added a bit dejectedly as she stared into her cup and watched the steam curl.
She didn't know what the girl's story was but she wasn't going to mess up another friendship by digging too much. She did that with Xzavier and look what it got her. Inwardly she sighed and hoped that Ana had a better time of it than she did.

ana followed as lily walked a couple doors down and into a small and quaint tea shop. it smelled amazing inside and ana felt calmer just being in the atmosphere of it. she sat down with ana, across from her, and browsed the menu. when the waitress came to take their order she decided on a white tea with spearmint leaves in it. she loved spearmint so it would probably be good. she looked back at lily realizing that the girl had been speaking to her. telling her about her time so far in new york and how it hadn't been going so well. ana supposed it was easy to tell when someone was new to new york. the deer in headlights look usually gave it away.
she then remember that lily had said something about her luggage. "Oh yeah, I filed one of those claims with the airline customer service, they said I should get it in a few days or so. My seizures aren't usually bad enough that I absolutely need my medication" she replied. more lies. that entire statement had been a lie. this was getting to easy. ana then let the conversation switch directions. lily seemed apt to talk about her life, so ana would go with that. "I am pretty new, I am just here visiting family. I'm from Romania actually" she replied. she figured releasing that one little bit of truthful information wouldn't hurt. lily could have one truth about ana. "So how come you aren't having a good time in life? I thought New York was like the city of fulfilled dreams or something" ana inquired. she figured if she kept lily talking about herself then she would be less likely to ask about ana' life. it usually worked. people generally liked to talk about themselves.

Something wasn't clicking right with this girl. Not that Lily was one to judge I mean she was killing vampires, demons and wherewolves for a job and writing about it. If anyone saw what she did they would think she was a raving loony if they didn't think she was a supernatural fiction writer. She'd thought the closest she'd get to the undead was that tv show about a vampire, ghost and werewolf living together. Ahh well truth is stranger than fiction they say. She stretched lightly and dusted herself off. "Well, I'm sure they will send your bags along shortly. That's one thing about the airlines. Eventually it all gets back to you."
She listened with interest as she spoke of being Romanian, "I'm half Vietnamese myself." she admitted with a grin as she sipped her tea and the chamomile did its work to soothe her nerves, "I...came to New York to get a fresh start. There was a guy I really liked. His name is Xzavier and he had this habit of being evasive. He just didn't like communicating that much so...after enough dates got cancelled and he gave me the brush off once too often I left. But, then some stuff came up around here and I had to let him know so he's in town and pissed at me for even being here which is really ironic since its his family that was the reason he had to come here in the first place." she stared into the cup of tea. "So I'm in avoidance mode with him." she shrugged her shoulders, "So what about you? Anyone in your love life?" she laughed softly as she sipped her tea, "You can't let me do all the talking."

this was panning out to be really easy. this girl, lily, was fully willing to talk about herself. it was so far, so good in ana's book. she learned that lily was part vietnamese, that was cool. she also learned that lily can come to new york to get a fresh start and get away from a bad ex of sorts. the girl was tired of the brush off. maybe ana couldn't relate because she was a flop in the romance department. she didn't have any advice for lily on the whole boy issues that she was having. it must be rather annoying that she skipped town to get away from a boy and then he ended up in the same town that she had decided to go to.
"That must be rather irritating. Trying to get away from someone but having them endlessly showing up right in front of you anyway" she replied as she took a sip of tea. it was delicious actually. when lily asked about her love life she went quiet for a moment. how could she even explain her love life. this is what she was afraid of, not being able to answer questions with believable answers. how was she even going to begin to describe her love life. she decided to take an easy route out. answer it vaguely as she had done with all of lily's other questions.
"Ah my love life, or lack thereof. I don't really have much to say about it really. Never had a serious boyfriend. I don't tend to connect with people too well, especially on an emotional level. I have been referred to as emotionally inept. I tend to keep more to myself, hence the lack of guys around me" she replied with a small smile, like it was all a big joke to her. what was she supposed to tel lily anyway? the truth would consist of, oh yeah there is one guy and we have two kids together, no big deal. oh and my kids are being kept at a government facility and experimented on...not the best conversation maintainer. ana did decide to tell a bit of the truth though and added "There was one guy, once, but I haven't talked to him in three years. Things kind of ended roughly."

"I wouldn't mind it if it wasn't always so frought with drama." she muttered as she stared into her cup and shook her head, "Anyway, that's my story in a nutshell. But its my own stupid fault really. I mean I thought he cared, and being an orphan...well I always end up caring for people that leave." she straighened herself up a bit, "But the good news is that tomorrow is another day and hes doesn't know where I live." she chuckled softly as she looked back at the other woman.
She knew that Ana was letting her do all the talking. She was using serveral ploys that Lily herself might use to get information from someone. Not that Lily cared. She was an open book as far as the world knew. "I get the ending roughly part. Do you have any family?" she asked politely as she stirred her tea and stretched a little bit, trying to keep to safe topics.

ana was happy that lily seemed content with doing most of the talking. usually people started getting really question happy by now but lily was keeping to relatively safe and simple topics. topics that were easy to lie about. she listened as ana bashed on herself about how it was her fault and how she always fell for people that would leave her. ana didn't like it when people looked down on themselves. "Look, he sounds like a jerk and didn't deserve someone like you anyway. From what I have gathered you are a sweet, caring and smart woman that is fully capable of taking care of herself" ana replied softly. she wasn't so great at the whole encouragement thing but hey at least she was trying. when lily mentioned that she was an orphan ana felt like that was something that they could relate to each other over.
lily then asked about her family. technically her only family had been the other experiments that were with her. "I never knew my parents. They sort of gave me away when I was a baby. I was taken into a center with other abandoned children, sort of like an orphanage I guess. I would say the kids there were my only family really. Three years ago we were all headed to the country when the train malfunctioned and crashed. Only me and two others survived the crash. So I guess you could say I am sort of an orphan too" ana replied. this was half truth and half lie. she was letting lily know a little bit more about her the more they talked. so far ana didn't see the girl as a threat. it was nice to be able to talk to someone and not completely lie. "I am in New York for a fresh start too. Running from a past that I have no desire to go back to" she added with a small laugh and took a sip of her tea.

Smiliing softly, Lily felt like for the first time in weeks she was being appreciated by another human being. Inwardly she shook herself and wondered what kind of a head trip she'd been putting herself through that she could let Xzavier determine how she felt about herself. "Thank you so much. It really helps to hear that from someone else. When I get left to my own thoughts too long it gets to be...difficult. Being new here hasn't helped much." she sipped her tea and sighed as it worked its way through her, warming the parts that were chilled both physically and mentally.
"Well it just means we'll have to keep an eye out for each other. This city can be dangerous and if you ever need someone to go with places I've got a lot of time free between assignments. I'd be happy to tag along if you want." she said as she looked over at the dark haired woman "I'm sorry about what happened to your family. I've always tended to build family out of the friends I had which is why I get disappointed easily some days." she shrugged her shoulders, "Everyone needs a fresh start sometimes, to lose themselves in the crowd."
