The soft rhythmic step of Knox’s black work shoes was almost shattering in comparison to the silence surrounding him. In the distance, the sounds of sirens, horns, and other common metro sounds were barely audible in the compounds of the bare back streets and alleyways of the city. He had thought that he had dressed properly for the new season with a pair of dark washed blue bootleg jeans, a dark gray V-neck shirt topped with his old faded leather jacket. Though he still received that chill along his spine from the exposed skin on the back of his neck. The shiver sent the hair along his arms and nape on end, and a shutter rippled through his body. He quickly reached into his pockets feeling for the familiar box that always came in handy after a grueling day at work. Finding the pack he quickly shook out a long and skinny cigarette, stopping momentarily to replace the pack into his pocket and light the welcoming addiction. He cupped his hand around the flame, enjoying the much needed warmth, as the tip of the paper began to burn. Relief washed over him as he inhaled the poisonous smoke, letting it fill his lungs. It was only when he felt he would burst if he held it any more when he let what little smoke hadn’t been absorbed escape his lips.[/i] the burly one to the right stated.
It took Knox a moment to realize that he was standing at the mouth of the alley he passed every day to get to work. He was almost positive that this alley provided a shortcut to his apartment, but had never ventured down it. It was a drawn-out alley, one that you couldn’t see the other end until you were almost halfway through it. He was all for adventure and risks but that’s all he needed was to run into an old dealer, or one of their punk bodyguards that he happened to have a disagreement with. Which by now in his life meant, over half in the city. His gaze straightened as he thought about the lengthy walk home, and how welcoming his bed was going to be as soon as he arrived. Which he was hoping would be sooner rather than later. His head dropped a bit before rolling to face the alley, followed quickly by his body. What was life without chances, right?
The walls of the buildings on either side of the alleyway blocked the harsh fall winds. A quarter way into the backstreet, the soft sound of silenced footsteps radiated behind Knox. He strained his ears listening to the individual paces of two different people. Hushed whispers matched the footsteps, before a loud and blatantly obvious cough echoed through the alley, followed by a muffled ’hey’. Of course he couldn’t have one day where something couldn’t go wrong. Why would that ever happen? He could just keep walking, he could simply keep his pace, maybe even quicken it a bit, and exit the other side where there was sure to be civilization to witness these three people. He could, but that just wasn’t him. Knox slowed his pace, easing to a calm stop. His eyes rolled as he brought the cigarette to his lips and took another drag, before crossing his right ankle over his left, and turning to face the men. Knox’s face fell into a confused expression as he pointed to himself, and gazed around as if looking for someone. ”Me?” After a moment of silence a smile played his features, as he raised his hand and waved at them. ”Well hi,” He didn’t recognize either of these men, and he had always made a note to himself to remember the faces of the people he’s pissed off, so these two were definitely strangers. He dropped his hand and slipped it into his pocket, feeling for his lock back pocket knife with the curved tip he always carried. He smirked as the memory of him placing his knife on the counter as he struggled with full hands to get out of the house. He had been late as usual and had been in a rush leaving his apartment with hands full with his wallet, jacket, shoes, and pants that he promptly put on, on his way out of the building. Well life just couldn’t give him a break could it?
”And what are you smiling at,”
Knox simply broadened his smile with a chuckle. After taking one last hit of his cigarette, giving him one more calm before the storm, he flicked it against one of the walls of the alley, before returning his attention to the men. ”Well,” he clapped his hands and began to slide the palms against each other as if for warmth, ”you see, I usually carry this little man in my pocket, so that when say, two or three men follow me into an alley I can just let him loose on them. But I seemed to have left him on my counter at home.” He pulled his hands apart and raised his shoulders in a nonchalant shrug. He stared as the strangers began to step toward him, chuckling at his smart comment. If he took out the big one first, he would be able to quickly take down the smaller one without distraction. His features were calm, but his heart was slamming in his chest, the beat roaring against his ear drums. He could feel the adrenaline rip through him as he watched the two men come closer. They both watched him as well, as if they expected him to run screaming for help. Fat chance. ”I know I’m pretty but are you really just going to stare at me all night? Because I highly doubt you two followed me down a dark alley just to admire my strong jaw and manly presentation.” With no response from either man, just continued movements toward him, Knox shook his head. As soon as the smaller one entered his range he sighed loudly. ”My move then.” Raising his leg, he thrusted his foot into the lesser ones gut, the effort made him stumble a bit, but at least it had the same reaction to the receiver. Knox barely had time to regain his balance as the larger one lunged for him. As if his body had a mind of its own he swiftly turned side face raising his arms as to not get them caught in the massive man that lurched past him. His eyes widened in surprise at his movement. ”That’s new.” Knox realized the moment of shock lasted a moment too long as he felt his legs kicked from underneath him. Pain shot through his leg as his knee hit first, but the pain was quickly masked as his head collided with the moist pavement next. This was definitely not a good start to this fight on his part.[/blockquote][/size]
