Important task (Ai)

Noah was in his mansion as usual, it was important that he talked to Ai, in his gut feeling he knew his time here were numbered. He just didn’t know why but he had that feeling and he needed to address certain things with certain vampires before things did go as he predicted. But first he had some very important things to address with Ai, this certainly wasn’t going to be one of those fights for sure, it was more of those personal stuff, something he never talked to anyone before but he felt he could trust Ai with the task at hand.

He sat in the study, just there thinking how this all could change within minutes from telling Ai his news. He felt guilty he’s kept it a secret from everyone but now that was going to change. He sat there in his study, staring at the moonlight. It was soothing and calming, he’s been through so much these past few days, with Eli, with Connor, with Robert, he felt now his own personal demons were going to rise and affect him and Ai very soon. He didn’t know if he was doing the right thing, but he just had to tell someone.

He just sat there, it was going to be a very emotion filled night tonight, that’s for sure. But there he was, minutes away, seconds away, it was anticipating, he could barely control himself, he was going to cross lines he swore to himself he was never going to cross but right now, it was of importance that he did it. There it was, the his doorbell, she was here, it was the moment of truth. Noah knew things were just not going to be the same anymore.

Ai looked at the letter again. She was sitting in her car wondering what it was that Noah could have possible wanted. The last time she had spoken to him they hadn’t gotten quite along. He had just assumed she was weak, no better then the demons. She had gotten flustered and stormed out. She didn’t think that that had endeared her to the head Vampire.

Finally she walked up to the door making sure to lock her car before ringing the doorbell. She sat there looking around the door post a moment before looking back at the peep-whole. She smiled as graciously as she could and bowed politely to the person that answered the door. “Konichiwa. I was summoned? Again?” she said looking up back into the piercing blue eyes. I hope this goes better then last time, she thought to herself.

Noah made his way to the door, it was the moment, the moment he feared, bringing up stuff he has never talked about with anyone. He made his way towards the door and paused for a bit, did he really want her to get involved, did he really want her to know everything. He should, he wanted to keep what was closest to him safe, and that was the point. He knew Ai could be the person to do this for him. He looked through the peep-hole, it was her, Ai, Noah opened the door as he gave her slight smile. “Ai, welcome, please come in, I’m glad you could make it”.

Noah welcomed Ai into his huge mansion, one she was already familiar with as he smiled at her. As he requested that they head to his study, where their last interaction didn’t go to well. “Please, let’s go to my study”. Noah smiled at her, he was a bit more calm now, but still nervous about the news he was about to unveil on Ai. He walked towards his study with her following him. “I hope I didn’t put you out of your way, I…you see…something came up, and I needed to talk to someone and, I thought of you”. He knew Ai was loyal to him, regardless of all he’s done, even they have different opinions on things, he was sure of one thing, she respected him as an elder and he knew she would pull through for him.

Noah made his way into the study, as he waited for Ai to make her way in before shutting the door. He turned and smiled at her. “Please, have a seat, could I get you anything?” He made his way towards a cupboard he had in his study that had anything you could think of. He just couldn’t believe he was going to tell Ai, the secret he has never told anyone before. But he felt he should, he just had this awful feeling and after recent events, he just had to make sure, everyone and everything he cared about was safe.

“Thank you Noah.” She nodded at him. “It’s no big deal… My employees’ are always telling me that it’s not healthy to fixate on an upcoming show. Fall fashion week in Singapore is coming up in a few weeks, and I normally don’t stop until the line’s perfect. But for the race, I’ll do anything.” She bowed her head and shoulders politely, making sure to keep her voice light. She was extremely annoyed that she’d been pulled away from work, but she was counting on Connor to get the work done. She was more concerned about their last run in; it hadn’t gone so well, despite her desire to help the race.

She sat down in a vaguely familiar chair and looked up at Noah. She stared at the wall trying to be determined not to be distracted by Noah’s piercing blue eyes… Yet the very thought brought her back to staring at him… “Father always said tea made any business meeting more reasonable,” she replied with a smile. “Am I in trouble Noah?” she asked and looked up at him. “It’s been a while since our last meeting, I had begun to think that I was off the hook for the incident. Or have you called me about the brother’s again… My last answer still stands I’m afraid.”

Ai looked up at Noah, her neutral face. She found that most Americans and Europeans thought it was a blank look, but anyone who really knew her, which was only one person now, knew just what that look was. She was trying to protect herself from a lust a mile wide, and man who’d never understand. She smoothed her dress and fixed her watch, a relic of the time she came from.

Ai took a seat, just like the last time, same chair, same dark night, just different circumstances. She asked for tea, luckily Noah always had a teapot ready with warm water. He enjoyed himself tea, way too much actually, but it was the only form of warmness he ever got. Noah took to tea cups and poured tea for himself and Ai as he walked towards his desk and put the teacup in front of her, as he made his was across the desk and put his teacup on his desk and then walked towards the window and looked out the window. The moon was as bright as it was before Ai came. Then Ai asked if she was in trouble, she seemed worried but stern and reminded him her response is still the same, which he already predicted but this wasn’t the reason he called her.

Noah looked over his shoulder and looked at Ai in the corner of his eye. “It’s good to know that Ai, it’s not why I asked you here. Besides, I took care of that myself. But no worries, you aren’t in trouble.” Noah sighed again as he looked through the window again, deep in thought, but he was happy Ai was here with him, he was happy he could tell her his one life’s secret. “Ai, I have great respect for you and I…I Know your loyalty to me is more than anyone one I know. Which is why I asked you here tonight”. Noah then turned around and made his way to his desk as he pulled his chair back and had a seat, now across from Ai, as he took a sip of his tea and put his cup back down.

“Ai, I’m about to ask a great deal of you, it won’t be anything wrong, no harm will come to anyone, but I need to know, I can trust you with this, because this is, one thing I hold close to my heart.” Noah looked down, a bit broken, a bit worried, he knew he could trust Ai with this, but what will she think of him? She’ll probably think he’s weak as a leader, to have such an emotional attachment to something, Noah wasn’t one to show much emotion, but then again, nothing in life meant more to him than this particular thing, or well, person.

Ai raised her eyebrows at Noah. He was secretsom on the best of visits, but suddenly… “Noah-san what are you talking about? Is everything okay?” She sat forward on her chair and placed her hands on her knees folded together. She tilted her head to one side and took on a very serious look. The very edges of her lips turned down. Her sire used to take that look on… Right before Ai had to pull the silver mirror out of her hand during the daylight hours.

“Of coarse Noah-san. Though I doubt no one will consider you week for caring about something. People who have something to fight for, fight more ferociously.” She reached forward and placed her hand near him on his desk. She smiled a pleasantly as she could for him and nodded at him. “Tell me.”

Noah was worried, he knew his time was just running out, but he was happy to have Ai here, he felt comfortable with Ai, he felt he could tell her anything. When she asked if everything was okay, he sighed, things were horrible, but he didn’t want to worry her little head. “Things…are just complicated Ai, complicated, my time here is coming to an end soon. I really want everything I care for to be safe when I do go, that includes you Ai.” Noah gave her a slight smile, she was so respectful of him, looked up to him, yet always remained herself and kept to her morals. Noah then made his way towards his desk he had a seat across Ai.

He could see the worry in her eyes, the fear, the curiousity, he just had to tell her everything now. Then Ai wanted to know, he knew she would, so it was time to tell her. “Ai, over five hundred years ago, I had a son and a daughter, when I turned I left them, so I don’t need to hurt them” Noah looked down, saddened to be reminded of such a painful time in his life, something he had lived with for five hundred years, so many years of regret. “But they lived on to be successful and lived fulfilling lives. They had children and their children had children and six generations later, I still visit their families at night” This was true, Noah couldn’t help it, he just had to know his family would be safe from harm forever. “That is why I ask of you Ai, to continue to watch over them, when I’m gone” Noah sighed as he pulled apicture of his pocket and laid it on the table so Ai could see.

He let Ai see the picture of the boy, which was of him asleep, which was the only time Noah was brave enough to watch over him. “His name is Jordan, Jordan van der Berg, you could say he’s my great, great, great, great, great grandson and he recently moved here”. Noah smiled slightly at Ai as he pulled the picture back and put it in his pocket. “I need you to look over him, take care of him when I’m gone. Do not tell him about me, or the monster I became” Noah didn’t want him to know he came from a family of vampires, or well who turned into one. “It is important that you do this Ai, I wouldn’t have asked you if I didn’t trust you”. Noah looked at Ai, with the most sensitive, sincere look on his face, of appreciation and gratitude.

She knew this attitude. She’d grown up during the Vietnam Era, and known soldiers came home and give up. She sighed. As far as she knew there was nothing she could do… “I’m touched you would think of me Sempai.” She sat back listening to what he had to say. He… Had… A family? That he… Still visited. Her facial expressions began to change from confusion and concern to flat out upset.

Ai looked at the picture and touched it lightly. “I could, but I have a question for you.” She sat back and looked at him taking a few deep breathes with her eyes closed. She summoned the memory of their first meeting. She was looking for his words to Robert Lovelace. “But you can’t protect them forever. Fifty years from now, when they are old, you, looking younger than they do, what purpose will you serve. When they die, what will be the purpose of you? That’s what we will be or will not be fighting for, our future, not those who will leave us along the way. But there will come a day, where you will have to chose, them or us.” She opened her eyes and looked at him. “Weren’t those your words Shishou-sempai?: She’d become very proper as her mother taught her. Despite the respectful words however, her tone was cool,.

It wasn’t common that you come across someone Eidetic but when your business is on the line… And the survival of the Vampires was part of her business. “Your exact words to Lovelace-san I believe Shishou-sempai. When he mentioned that he had a resource that we didn’t have before. What makes your descendent more special then his?” She was challenging him now.

There it was, he told her the truth and she was thankful, happy he told her but he could tell she wasn’t happy with everything, something was bothering her, something she had to know and there it was, the question, he had said many times about turning away your past but here he was, asking Ai to keep an eye on his family, keep an eye on his bloodline. He sighed slightly as he addressed Ai. “I can protect them forever, too keep what I created going, my family is the only thing to my past I have left.” He sighed and looked into Ai’s eyes; this is all he wanted from her, nothing more but he could have expected this question and his motives. “My loyalties have always been with my people, and I have never put my priorities ahead of those of the vampire community. This is why I’m asking you to carry on this task, not the community, but only you” Noah trusted her, Noah knew she would do this for him, even with all the questions, he knew her loyalties was with him.

But then she made mention of Robert Lovelace and what he may have said to him and it was true, but Robert’s doings where not like Noah, they were different, they were completely different situations. “Robert was a fool to stay with his family, when I was turned, I left my family, and they know nothing of my existence, they know nothing about my whereabouts even as I witnessed my daughter’s death, and I promised myself I would take care of all her children, keep an eye on them, and that is what I did, and they knew nothing of it.” Noah was growing a bit aggressive when he spoke to Ai, he never intended too, but remembering his daughter, old, wrinkled in her eighties just brought so much emotion back into him. He could barely control himself. “I’m sorry for my out burst Ai, I’ve just been dealing with this all for almost five hundred years” He sighed as he looked down a bit upset on the way he reacted to Ai. “But that is not all Ai, there is one more thing I need to tell you” It seemed Ai was up for a whole lot of news in one round. But Noah knew he could trust her with this all.

Noah sighed as he broke the news to Ai. “My time as the Vampire elder will soon come to an end as is my time on this earth” Noah was completely heartbroken to tell Ai this, but he had this dream, this weird dream where this mysterious woman told him, “the Project will rid the world of the Creator” all he could have thought of was Eli, that Eli was going to do something to him but he didn’t know if he should take it seriously or not. “I had a dream….and my time here, is running out I fear, which is why I asked you to carry out this task for me.” Noah was worried he might die, that he would be no more and he just needed to tell someone before it all happened, before it all came to an end and all his secrets died with him.

“Forever?” She sat forward. “You’re making arrangements for your death… And you think that you have forever!” Ai shook her head. She thought she heard him say he was loyal to him. Ai laughed. “Noah. I am loyal only to our kind. See I have something in common with Eli. I was turned by an Elder that couldn’t handle themselves. You say you ask me, and only me. But I have never looked at the world like you, when something needs doing you delegate.”

Not different? Ai scoffed again, rolling her eyes this time. “Shishou… No… Noah. You just said something that doesn’t make sense for a title like Shishou.” She sat forward and pointed at Noah. “You are a coward! Robert lived with his daughter and her cousins. Many girls. Do you understand what a human woman goes through? You abandoned your family. You stalked them like a coward who couldn’t speak to someone who intimidates them.”

Ai shook her head. “You want me to take over what you were to scared to do. To scared to protect them, or love them. You want me to stalk some Mishiranu hito like a coward woman!” Ai spat the last word, and an idea came to her mind. Her sire. She was still in New York, Ai knew where. “It’s the twenty-first Century. You can’t expect me to demean myself so.” She looked at him as if seeing him for the first time. “This is what I mean. Mr. Vandervoort.” She hoped that the sudden use of the cold formality of the English would put her feelings in contrast. “Some where sub-consciously you’ve figured out that going back on your own that going back on your codes is coming back to bite you on the ass, and the fact that Eli still isn’t one of us on his own yet has you running to the nearest Shinigami.”

She stood up. “I can’t say I will Noah. These people would be living well enough with out you, even if you hadn’t been turned. And I won’t be a pawn in your continuing Hypocrosy. Robert’s only difference from you is rank and age. Well that and the fact, he wasn’t a hypocrite. I hope that you will learn sooner or later, and before you send yourself to the other side of the veil. Good luck Vandervoort-san.” Ai stood up and started to walk to the door. “I’ll see myself out,” she said. She started to the door again and gripped the handle. “I can’t believe I thought you were hot… Remind me next time there’s only one Elder for me…”

It seemed everything Noah told Ai, everything he said angered her incredible, she may have thought she knew the truth, she may have assumed so but with every word she laid out at him, he could tell she didn’t know everything, he could tell, he never told her everything, but as he tried to get a word in, there she continued, she was really letting him have it, she wasn’t holding anything back, Noah didn’t know if he should be angered, if he should be disappointed, if he should be hurt, all he knew, Ai was giving him a piece of her mind even up until she got up and was ready to storm off, calling him a hypocrite, comparing him to the weak and cowardly Robert Sinlcaire, Noah wasn’t sure how much he could take but he certainly got angered by that comparison. As she got up to leave, and was heading off, out where his fangs, he had heard enough of Ai’s banter, enough of what she had to say, now it’s time, for her to listen, as he leaped of his chair and within seconds, he was in front of her, fangs out, eyes pitch black and was ready to talk business. “Get back in that Seat….NOW! Now is my turn to talk”

As he put back in his fangs and made his way to his chair awaiting Ai to take her seat back. Ai thought she knew it all, but she didn’t she had nothing in common with Eli, she was turned by an Elder for his own evil pleasure, he had plans for Eli, oh he did. “You think you know what you are talking about, Eli was never turned because I couldn’t handle myself, before turning Eli, I learned control, I lived over seventy five years without needing anyone’s’ blood, I settled for the occasional animal blood, Eli was nothing more than someone, who got involved with the wrong people, Eli’s boy friend and his family are hunters and hunted our kind here and the only reason I turned Eli, was to see, if he would kill his boyfriend, now that he was the enemy. Your turning was nothing like Eli’s and I broke a commitment to myself, something I refused to do, something I haven’t done in over a hundred years…which was turn someone, because I don’t wish this life upon anyone!” Noah yelled at Ai, which he regretted but she seemed completely different from the wholesome girl he knew, the wholesome girl he liked.

As it seemed Ai was about to say something, he made sure to tell he to keep quiet. “Silence, it’s my turn to talk” he said, rudely, he hated being rude, especially with Ai, he always had a soft spot for her, always liked her, but his ice cold heart, never allowed him to love. “When I was first turned, I killed a thirteen year old child out of pure lust for blood, you want to call me a coward, believe what you may Ai, but I wasn’t going to put my own children in that danger, I didn’t know what I was, I didn’t know why I craved blood, why the sun burned my skin, I was left without a maker over five hundred years ago, to figure it out all on my own, and you call me a coward for protecting my family from myself” Noah sighed as he looked down, he never spoke of this to anyone, but he wasn’t going to be lowered to anyone standards for the one choice he had to make to keep my family safe from himself, making sure he got his point across clear to why he turned his back on his family, he made sure to get a good look into her eyes.

But what pretty much made him angered was not only being compared to Robert, but being seen as less than them. “For you to compare me to that man, to that Robert, who gave the one thing I’ve been wanting over five hundred years, mortality so he could out live his own family, so he could see them all die one for one? Is just disappointing, he has no idea what he had willing fully given up. I will not take that Ai, not from someone I actually cared about in more than five hundred years, now that you’ve heard it all, you can go, because clearly, I’m not the person you thought I was and now I fear, neither are you” Noah turned his back to Ai, hurt by what he said, but he had to, Ai brought up memories and emotions he hadn’t felt in years. “I’ll just take care of Eli and everything else, on my own” he said with a slightly disappointed voice, he hoped things between him and Ai wouldn’t end like this, but sadly it seemed it will.
