Mari sat at a writing desk with her laptop as she tried to relax a bit and figure out what was going on in her life. It seemed like her father had barely let the ink dry on Luke's adoption papers before they had had to move to Diana's. She was still in shock over a lot of it but she knew it was best for everyone at the moment.
Luke had once thought that she was a slave to her father and while in some ways that was very true there were things she' d managed to avoid...barely but it was something. Now she wouldn't have to worry about it any more and once things were settled she and Luke would have the freedom to live their lives the way they wanted to. It felt odd to have a younger brother but she found she loved it. She was still skittish of him sometimes and vice versa but they seemed to get on well.
Looking up as she heard a set of footsteps she smiled warmly, "Hey there." she called.

Luke walked through the house silently as he took in his surroundings. Sure they had been here for a while, but he hadn't really taken the chance to look around. As he walked around, his mind raced with all the changes that had befallen him: finally being free of Selena, registering for the next semester of classes, moving in with a woman Marina's father knew...he frowned at that last thought, unsure of how he felt about it. What if she was just like Selena? He didn't want to go through that again.
He shook the thoughts away and continued down the hall. Hearing Marina's voice, he stopped and turned to her. "Hey," he greeted. "So, there's been a lot of changes, huh?" he asked. He wasn't quite sure what to say. He didn't want to do something to anger her or her father. His eyes clouded as he tried to will these thoughts away.

"Yeah. Have a seat. You don't have to worry Luke. I'm not gonna hurt you." she said softly, "Been hurt too much to ever want to do that to someone else." she said softly as she looked back at him. "I'm sorry if this is a lot to take in at once. I half expect any day to find out its all a dream but it seems like its real." she said this with a tenative look to her face.
Luke was one of the few people she didn't have to have a fake attitude for. The fact was that around him she barely spoke above a whisper partially to keep him from worrying and partially because it was just nice not to have to play the tough chick card every moment of her life. She could be herself. "I won't let anything happen to you." she promised him as best she could. "I'm usually the one making mistakes so don't worry about it okay?" she gave him a soft smile and put down her pen as she turned carefully to look at him. The fact was that Luke was far stronger physically than she was. He could outrun and evade her, not that he had had to, but she thought of herself as the least threatening person on the planet.
"I hope you see the changes as good." she offered for lack of anything better to say. Her tone hopeful as she regarded him.

Luke walked into the room and sat by the doorway, giving himself the choice of exiting quickly if he needed to. When Marina stated that he didn't have to worry cause she wouldn't hurt him, he flashed her a quick, small smile, telling her that he understood. "Yeah, I know what you mean. We've both been hurt, haven't we?" he asked.
When she said that it was a lot to take in and that it sometimes felt like a dream, he nodded in agreement. "More than you know. Sometimes I have a hard time believing that this whole year has happened and that Selena's actually gone," he admitted. He had gotten lucky when she had been killed, even if people didn't realize how lucky.
He flashed her a smile when she told him not to worry and that she wouldn't let anything happen to him. "I'll try," he promised. When she said that she was the one usually making mistakes, he shook his head. "I don't see how that's possible," he stated. Then again, with people like Selena and Marina's father, almost any move could be a mistake.
When she said that she hoped that he'd see the changes as good, he just let out a shrug. "I think it's too early to tell," he admitted. He fell silent, unsure of what to say.

"Yes, I've never been what my father wanted me to be. Not once. I defied him at every turn and yet for some reason I'm still alive and my brothers are dead. I suppose I shouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth but its just hard sometimes." she said softly.
"I'm afraid to go to sleep. I know I will eventually but I don't want to. I don't want to risk seeing my dad in my dreams. Its just creepy and I hate it." she hugged herself as he spoke of Selena, "You probably feel the same way about Selena don't you?"
"Oh believe me its possible. If I looked at my father wrong it could mean a beating or worse. I suppose you are right that we should just wait and see. I'm just nervous. I don't like waiting for things. Makes me think the worst is gonna happen. You're one of the few good things in my family, Luke. I'm glad you're here even if its scary for you. Its nice having someone around."
