causing problems makes you famous allthis VIOLENCE makesastatement - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - The guy looked at him. “Are you sure? It doesn’t look any different…” he trailed off looking at the little white bag. Jyo lifted up his shirt just enough to show. “Care to ask me if they wouldn’t undercut us again? This is the better stuff. You only need that much for the high you’re used to. They cut theirs with flour, this is 100%. More expensive, better buzz. Do you want it or not?” He leaned back against the stack to make sure no one was coming. A second later Jyo was counting his score. Just a few more sales and Jyo’s brother would be able to afford his last month’s rent for the school year. He was coming home over the summer, and planning on volunteering at the hospital. To bad Hazard Street wasn’t open anymore. His brother was into the paranormal shit, Jyo didn’t know if he did or not.
He chuckled. Someone with his strange ability to know stuff, to know what happened, would happen, or was happening like he saw it himself was weird. But it didn’t look like his elder brother had the gift. If his younger brother had possessed it, maybe he would still be alive. He looked around the stack again. His new client was still hanging around. Since anyone in the building could have seen them talking, Jyo had to hang around till well after the guy left. He had to cover his ass incase la mierda found him on the streets. Of coarse the guy would have to be stupid to sell out a Black Rose dealer. No one knew the signs to look for to spot a council member. It was a jealously guarded secret, the addition of the blood drop to the rose stem. Of coarse there had to be a few cops in prison who knew, but whatever. They guy didn’t and if he rated out a Council, the whole gang would exact retribution from his own skin. Not pretty. People didn’t mess with Black Rose lightly.
Jyo was stuck here for a while it seemed. So he looked at the stacks they were in. Socialogy? There seemed to be books on all sorts of gang life. But one caught his eye. The Story of the Gem Stone Stem: The Founding of the Black Rose and Their Rival Diamond
. “They already have a book on us?” he asked as he turned around and ripped the book off the shelf. He found an empty table and sat down with his back to the wall so he could keep an eye on the crowds in case of trouble. He flipped the book open and started to read. After a moment someone else came and sat down across from him. Jyo looked up at the person warily. “Hello?” he asked. Merry took a polite step back, "Is there a way I can help you, Sir?" she asked him with a gentle tone as she stood there in her pink dress and heels. She couldn't see the book and had no idea that a deal had just gone down. Her name tag listed her name as Merry and she shifted slightly to improve the line of her posture. What was it with LA being full of gorgeous people? They seemed to ooze out of the woodwork. She would think he was a vampire but it was daylight. Bah she had vampires on the brain and she needed to stop watching Vampire Diaries on television. Her dad was laughing his ass off at how soap opera it all was. Dopplegangers and vamps switching sides and everything did seem fantastical but then her dad lived in the basement in what was the equivalent of a bomb shelter so who was she to talk? She'd gone down there to ask him a question and found the door locked and bolted. What was he doing down there anyway? It sounded like he was ripping things out of the walls. She sighed and came back to reality to help the guy in front of her. Her thoughts going back to the sociology books on the shelf. She folded her hands neatly in front of her and glanced at the bookshelves, "Are you interested in sociology?" she asked by way of making polite conversation, the slight tease of her rose perfume subtle as she made sure she had the time to contribute to Jyo that he may need. No one was likely to bother her so it didn't look like she'd get pulled away. He was in the 300's and not many people came in this area. Sociology and Anthropology were not popular topics.

causing problems makes you famous allthis VIOLENCE makesastatement - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Jyo looked around to make sure the girl really was talking to him. “Uh…” he looked down at the text he was ready. “Um, yes! I was trying to do a little research on an individual… He’s not famous or anything… Or at least really famous. He was a gang lord a number of years back… Flared up the gang violence a while back. They call him the Snake? He was a member of Black Rose… Or Diamond. Depends on who you talk to.” He reached around to scratch the back of his head, and make sure his gang tattoo was hidden either by his hair or his shirt… Maybe his mother was right… Polo’s would look better… And he could hide in neutral territory much more easily.
He had to think on his feet… Getting busted making a deal here by the staff would mean that one of his best spots would be out of the question for a good long while… He’d have to take on a trainee and teach them how to avoid being caught in here… But Jyo’d loose out on the money. “Ye..Yea. I’m doing research… Kinda. On the founding of one of the newer, yet bigger gangs in LA county. Maybe your heard of it, Black Rose?” Jyo tilted his head at her. He was failing fast. It had to be obvious he was lying through his teeth.
“Do you know where they’d keep other books… Or if you even have more on them? The Cat and the Snake were only about twenty years ago or so. It’s probably not as big a research project as say the Mexican Mafia or Nuestra Familia.” He closed the book he was reading and stood up so she could show him where others were. To be honest he was looking for truthes as Black Rose presented them… He wanted to see if outsiders could get it right.
A second girl brought to attention how pretty the girl was. He passed his best smile at her to try and weasel out of his obvious blunder at lying a moment ago. She was a little high end for him. She was a librarian, that meant she was more in line with his elder brother, but he was cuter, that usually worked in his favor when it came to the ladies. “Sorry, I’m Jyo,” he introduced him self to her.

Merry shook her head, "I know its one of the biggest gangs in LA and they're about equality but not much beyond that. I mean I know the Black Rose and Diamond occured because of a schism but thats all. I think I caught something on that show Gangland that mentioned it. My cousin changed it so he could watch Dance Moms."
"Oh you're doing a service learning project? That's so great. I did a few of those during my graduate degree." she said as she looked and pulled a book, "This one was researched for about a year. A woman befriended a few female members of Black Rose and wrote their stories down. It was interesting. Actually my dad would know more about that. He volunteers at shelters twice a week to make sure there are enough supplies and such." she said with a happy smile.
"I think...follow me...we should find them here." she admitted as she gestured to the books as they walked, "These should work. Failing that you can always see if the university library has any. Marina Sinclaire runs it and she knows more about what they have on the shelf than anyone there." she dug around in a pocket and passed him a small brochure, "Here, this has got the university library information. You can get a library card there for $35 a semester. If you just need access to more books it might be a good resource."
Merry blushed and smiled, "Hi, Jyo. My name is Merry. Its good to have you here. This place can get a bit dull sometimes." she admitted with a soft chuckle, "Well unless you count the more colorful characters here. Nice to meet someone that's polite." If he was lying she couldn't tell. She was generally thinking he was a nice guy. "Is there anything else I can help you with? I think we might have some photos in special collections that you might find interesting." she said after a moment, "And news articles online and some on microfish."

causing problems makes you famous allthis VIOLENCE makesastatement - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - He nodded his head at her. “Yea, they’ve revolutionized Gangland a bit.” Jyo then winced. “Dance Moms? Gods I hate that show!” He shuddered. “My God Son’s Mom loves it. Her psycho DA mother made her dance until she entered High School with us when she got voted into our district. She says it reminds her of days when her mother and her got along.” Jyo made a rather ugly face. “Just a bunch of winy brats worse their kids in my opinion.” As Merry talked about her father working with people at the shelters, Jyo just looked at the book. It wasn’t illegal to talk to other people, but it was frowned on. Jyo might have to do something about it if they painted the gang in a bad light. “Really?” he asked her half interested.
Jyo looked at the books. Most of them were on the phenomenon of Gangland. He glanced over the books and wondered at them. There was one that the title sounded like it was about the Schism… It might be promising… Diamond jealously guarded its secrets, if someone had made a book about their foundation… Jyo smirked. Maybe there was something to this book learning. They needed to send a couple of people to college in sociology… Someone who wasn’t ready to retire. He looked up. “$35?! What do they need that kinda money for? Don’t they charge $13,911 per year per undergraduate student? And like 14,618 per year per graduate student? And that’s for in state students. Why do they need to charge $35 per library card? What is the University spending its money on?” He took the brochure and studied the cover for a moment.
“It’s nice to meet you Merry.” He winked at her. He blinked at her. He’d noticed the homeless people, but in his experience they were pretty harmless. Well part of that might be that they knew to stay away from the dangerous gang banger who would kill them if they screwed with him to much. “If it’s that problematic, why not ban people who haven’t bathed in a week?” He was thinking about anything else he might need for the little bit of research they were doing when he looked up at her funny. “Microfiche?” he asked Merry. “Huh?”

Merry nodded as she let him look over the book and she watched his features shift as he grew deep in thought. She nodded, "I personally think its a horrid image to give young girls but its always easy to judge something when your outside looking in." she admitted with a shrug. "Society has been doing that for a millenia." When he complained she sighed, "The databases. In order to have as wide a range of databases libraries have to pay exorbitant fees to publishing companies who make the databases and since those companies all have similar prices and make bank libraries are forced to either pay the fees or do without and as a result patrons unfortunately make up the extra. Even if they could get the president of UCLA to take a pay cut it wouldn't help public libraries to offer the same databases because the public library just isn't funded the same way. When you add to that that private donations shape collections and as a library one has to be careful what donations they accept it gets really tricky."
She turned slightly and tilted her head, "The library has a mandate to serve the public and while its always nice when people bathe its not...an indicator of violent behavior. Sure its unpleasant but I've lost count of how many women who have escaped abusive relationships slept on the street for a day or two before getting accepted in a shelter. Technically, at the time they were homeless but they needed the information we provided to help them turn their lives around. With the economy being the way it is many people just need a place where they can be accepted for who they are not what they are. And believe me when I say this. I've had a homeless man defend me when he felt a jock was being overly rude. Some of the nicest people can come from the humblest situations and some of the real psychos wear three piece suits. You just never know."
"Microfische is a film that has old magazine articles and newspaper articles recorded on it. They were what folks used before the internet to look up past events." she said with a gentle shrug of her shoulders to let him know that she wasn't being condescending or anything like that, "Its old but you might find something in there that could help your project." she beamed at him happily before brushing her curls out of her eyes, "I'd be happy to show you how to load the machine to view them if you can give me an idea of what newspaper and or date you want to start from."

causing problems makes you famous allthis VIOLENCE makesastatement - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Jyo scratched his neck absent mindedly thinking about his own life. “Yea I know. Still whiny brat Mom’s setting bad examples for their daughters.” He looked at her and studied her features while she explained why the school library had to charge an arm and a leg. He shook his head. “Who ever said technology made things better for humanity seriously needs to be shot. The only technology that we’ve managed to use that actually made life better was the gun. Now we can put ourselves out of our misery that much faster.” He scoffed then looked at her. “Wow that was dark of me…” He blinked a moment or five then looked at her, “Just pretend I didn’t say anything like that…”
He shook his head. “I get women and all that. I’ve live my life on the LA streets, I’ve seen what the wrong side of the street, or the using end of a drug can do to people… And one or five days is legal in those situations. My God Son’s mother was out of the streets for days before she told us she’d been kicked out of her parents.” He shook his head. “Oh I know. Hun, I may not look it, but I come from a home of less then twelve K a year with three boys and an alcoholic. I’ve seen some of the humblest people do amazing things…” Jyo mentally shook his head. Merry came from money, he doubted she’d understand.
“Ah… Would it go back that far?” he asked. For somereason despite his earlier dark remark, he couldn’t see pre-techonology being that space efficient. They would have to clean out all that record every ten years right? They had to. To have Newspaper Articles from every LA paper going back that far would take up a lot of space. “Maybe they might.” Jyo thought about it. If they went back far enough, perhaps they have something about the gang violence that flared up when Black Rose started taking territory, and during the Schism.
The math wasn’t hard. It had been fourty-eight tax cycles since the Cat founded the gang based on equality of members. Three tax cycles a year meant eighteen years put it about 1994. He blinked for a moment, he didn’t realize that Black Rose was so young. No wonder they were so impressive. “Let’s see the Cat found Black Rose about eighteen years ago. Give two years for land acquisition and the Schism… I think I’m looking for 1996 for violence to catch the media’s attention.” He turned his attention back to her. “Would you?” he smiled. “I’m fail at this stuff… Normally books aren’t my forte, but my little brother was killed by these gangs… I kinda want to know more.” Not a whole lie. Jyo knew why his brother was killed, and he knew more about Black Rose then they’d probably find. But more on Diamond… This might prove prophitable.
