Mandy was running through the halls, she wanted to meet the counselor today but he was leaving early today, so she had to make it on time. She was running towards her locker. She had to make a quick stop and change a bit, she had sewing class after anyways. She was a bit of a crazy head right now. She had to do so much at her locker that she wasn’t sure where the her counselor was but she was sure she was almost late. She was going to ask about her schedule and help her find a way to do her fashion and finance all together. She was finally at her locker, the combination she thought, what was it again? Oh she remembered 16.09.14.11.25….which was basically spelled out Pinky, she liked it, but she had to get used to it. Either way, no time to think, late, late, late! The counselor would be leaving soon.
She swung her locker open as she took out her make up back, she needed a quick mirror. She removed her glasses and tossed them into the locker. She just came from her finance class, she wanted to look the part and look smart, but now its styling and she had to look all perky. She was struggling to add her lenses but after a few attempts and a tiny mirror, she managed to pull it off. Then she quickly added some lipstick. Pink, cute, yet really girly she liked it and it matcher her top. She then began digging through her locker, it wasn’t the most orderly place in the world but there it was her head band. She put on her head band, her hair was set, lenses in, lipstick on. Time to meet the counselor!
Her current schedule had her on the run most of the time. She then looked at her watch, it was late, and she already missed him. He was gone; guess she’d have to see him tomorrow about trying to help her with her current schedule. She closed her locker as she turned around and she saw someone familiar. It was this guy called “Rodney”. He was on the football team last she remembered. She remembers seeing him at one of the practices when she was in her cheer leading practices. But she never approached him or talked to him before. She was going shopping later anyways, maybe he would come with her, she could use some muscle to carry some of her bags. She felt like going on a bender. So she quickly tried to approach him, calling his name. “Hello!...Hello!... Rodney?” She tapped his shoulder to get his attention “Hello you!!... You’re Rodney right?”

Rodney loved that UCLA had lockers for their students. It made him feel like he was in high school all over again. It wasn’t that he missed those days at all. He liked being here at college. But it was nice to remember sometimes what used to be. Rodney had reserved himself a locker in the middle of campus which was closer than his dorm room was to all of his main classes. It was just easier for him to get to his stuff without having to carry around a huge book bag. Not that he couldn’t carry a book bag around. Hell, he could bench press 270. But coach had said with his knee problems, he should probably not put anymore strain on it than necessary, so he wouldn’t have to sit out another game.
Rodney spun the combination being able to open it on the first try. It was nice that he didn’t have to fiddle with it. It irritated him standing at a locker for fifteen minutes trying to get it open. Once the locker was open, he lifted his arms shoving his biology book, biology notebook, and biology folder in. Thank god that class was over for the week. Luckily it was only twice a week for an hour and fifteen minutes each time. If he had to spend another minute in that class, he’d probably want to shoot himself. He dug his psychology book out of the locker along with the notebook and folder to go with it. Now that class was another story. He actually enjoyed going to lecture when it came to psychology. It was such an interesting field. If this physical education that he was going for didn’t work out, at least he’d have a fall back on something else he loved. But as interesting as psychology was, it bothered him that he may have to think about changing majors. If his knee didn’t fix itself, that is what he’d have to start thinking about.
Just as these thoughts entered his head, Rodney heard his name being called from behind him. Very soon after, he felt a tap on his shoulder. He remembered that voice very well. After all, he was a football player and cheerleaders were the main girls that the guys loved to listen to and gawk at. He turned and standing right in front of him was Mandy Donnelly. He smiled. “Hey. Yeah I’m Rodney. And you’re Mandy, right?” It wasn’t really a question. He already knew it as her. She wasn’t a face he could forget. “What can I do for you?”

Rodney turned around and smiled at her, which was a good sign, since she wasn’t being a bother to him. She was right, he was Rodney and she was ecstatic to learn he also knew her name. “Yes, yes, I’m Mandy, the one and only”. Mandy smiled even more when he asked if there was something he could do for him. Bingo! She thought to herself. He asked the wrong question to the wrong girl. “You know Rodney, for a matter of fact there is. I’m in the mood to go on a shopping bender later today and I could use a strong feller to carry my bags for me. And from the looks of it, you are pretty strong so just wanted to know if you wanted to join me. That’s if you are willing too of course!”
Mandy wasn’t one to hold back and fear speaking her mind. She laid out everything she had to say the moment her mouth started moving. “Because the way I see it, if this was a 90’s teen comedy, you’d be the Jock, I’d be the prissy mean girlfriend and you’d fall for the less attractive smart girl. But I’m not prissy or mean, so I don’t see why we couldn’t be friends.” Why Mandy was being physiological with 90’s movies references she had no idea, but she was a huge “She’s All That” fan, though it wasn't because she found Freddie Prinze jr. Really cute, or well maybe that’s what it was.
So she stared at Rodney, with this kind of persuasive smile and batting her eyelashes like she was trying to convince her father to get her what she wanted. “So Rodney, what do you say? Want to be my personal shopping buddy later today? Or do you have practice after? I wouldn’t mind because we could go after as well”. Mandy was just one of those girls who never wanted to be alone. Since she had no cheerleading practice later and had a free afternoon and nobody would be home anyways to see her, she might as well make use of her time to go out shopping and make a new friend.

When Mandy went on to tell him what she came to talk to him about, Rodney was intrigued. He didn’t know this girl very well, and she was asking him to go shopping with her. Rodney chuckled to himself. Just a few days ago Axel was talking to him about how girls seemed to flock to him. Lately he was feeling like maybe he had a point. Unfortunately, none of the girls seemed to want to be anything more than just a friend. It was fine, really. He didn’t need a girlfriend, and if he did, he’d want to make sure she was the right girl for him. But he could never tell with Mandy. Not that he had talked to her at any other time than this one, but he had heard her always talking with a few of the guys on the football team including his arch nemesis, Wesley Hunter. She always seemed so playful and outgoing. As hard as it already was for him to tell if a girl was flirting or not, Mandy was even harder to read.
But when she brought up the 90’s teen comedy scenario, it was fairly certain that that familiar outgoing friendly behavior that he had heard before with a few other guys on the team was happening with him. It was perfectly fine though. Maybe she didn’t even realize that someone might mistake her perky behavior for flirting. Or maybe she did but didn’t care. He really didn’t know her well enough to know for sure what went on in that pretty little head. “Hmm, well, I’m not the typical jock, so I don’t know if it would work for me either,” he commented as he closed his locker once he made sure to have all the things he would need for his psychology class. He was a jock, but not a real jock per say. If someone didn’t know Rodney, they would think he was a brain dead football player who only cared about the game. Boy, were they wrong. Rodney was one of the smartest people at his high school, and those smarts pretty much just transferred over with him when he moved to UCLA. And yeah, he cared about football, but he also cared about his future which didn’t involve just football but teaching, teaching physical education. He disliked when people made accusations about him before even getting to know him. Although he was pretty sure Mandy was just being hypothetical and funny not meaning at all to be mean or stereotypical.
Rodney watched as Mandy batted her eyelashes at him. He laughed. He thought it was funny that she thought he would need much convincing at all. Rodney enjoyed going out and doing things even if it was holding a bunch of shopping bags for a girl. It was nice to get away for a while to somewhere that wasn’t the library to study or the park to clear his head. And it had been quite a while since he’d hung out with anyone other than Merry. Hell, he hadn’t even seen Axel in a few days, and he lived with him. “I’d love to, Mandy. And no practice for me tonight.” He glanced down at his knee. “Sort of screwed up my knee. Coach won’t let me play for a while.” Rodney was really sad about not being able to play. He would constantly have to go to the doctor for sport related issues, and every time, he’d come out not listening to a word he’d say. Now, the doctor got the coach involved which really pissed him off. The only reason he went to the doctor was to have him fix the problem right then and there just so it wouldn’t hurt as bad when he played. Oh well, Rodney figured that whatever they decided to do for him was done to benefit him. At least this way he wouldn’t have major issues later on down the road when it actually mattered. “So, where would you like to meet? I’ll drive if you want.” He gave her a friendly smile.

While Mandy was batting her eyelashes she noticed Rodney laughed, she was kind of excited inside. That was a sure yes. She found herself a shopping buddy for today. She was thrilled with his response when he said he’d love to go shopping with her. She was just over the moon. She put on this huge smile on her face as he mentioned something about his knee but she really didn’t follow it though. She was a bit over excited he could go shopping with her. He had no training later and he was willing to drive and pick him up. This day just turned for the better.
“Really, you can drive me too? Rodney you are a life saver! You just made my day the best like ever!” Mandy screeched in joy a bit as she jumped on to him and wrapped her arms around his neck as she hugged him in excitement. She quickly remembered he said something about his knee, she suddenly figured all her weight on top of him couldn’t be good for his knee. She quickly jumped off of him as she looked down, a tad bit worried. Hopefully she didn’t hurt his knee even more than it already was. “Oh you’re knee, I’m so sorry if I may have hurt your knee even more”. Mandy smiled at him hoping she didn’t hurt anything or her chances for a chopping buddy.
“I was a bit excited about you shopping with me, can’t help it, I love shopping”. Mandy felt a little bad, she seemed a bit too excited for shopping but she just got her monthly allowance in and 50% was going into her new clothes. She needed to, maybe a give a compliment or say something nice since she might have hurt his knee or something. “Well, on the bright side, I could see you are strong enough to handle all the shopping we are going to do!” Hey, the guy had some guns on him, Mandy was a girl, and she notices these kinds of things. “You must work out a whole lot, I can sure tell you do”. Mandy smiled at Rodney, he seemed really reserved unlike her, who didn’t have much of a filter to her.

Rodney grinned when she told him that it had made her day even better that he had told her he would drive. Driving wasn’t a problem at all for him. Any chance he got to show off his yellow 1990 stingray corvette, he would jump at it. But he wasn’t sure if Mandy would even appreciate the looks of his baby. She just didn’t seem like the type to know anything about cars. He knew though. It was possible that she could surprise him. “Well, I’m glad I could…” Rodney began but was stopped mid-sentence when Mandy jumped into his arms. Rodney had no clue how to react to something like this. It wasn’t every day that a peppy blonde girl threw herself at him literally. It was a bit uncomfortable. “Uh, no problem,” he said as he hesitantly patted her back. He was happy when she jumped off though. Mandy was a tiny little thing, but that extra weight did weigh down on his knee tremendously. He glanced at her. “No, no, it’s fine. I don’t think its ever going to feel better regardless of what else happens to it.”
When Mandy began to talk about how happy she was that he accepted her offer to shop with her, he knew she wasn’t lying. When it came to girls, Rodney was a bit clueless, but one thing he did know was that there wasn’t one girl who didn’t enjoy shopping. And Rodney actually liked it too as long has he got something out of it. Even though they would be shopping for Mandy, Mandy would just have to deal with them stopping at a shoe store, so he could buy himself a new pair of tennis shoes and a new football duffle.
Rodney could feel his cheeks flush a bit when she started talking about his muscles. What was it with girls and muscles? He thought it was so funny. Yes, he worked out, but were they that much bigger than other guys on the football team? He knew he wasn’t a twig by any means, but he didn’t realize that he was as buff as everyone made him out to be. “Yeah, I work out enough.” He gave her a smile. “What about you? Any working out for you?” He already thought he’d know the answer to that one. Mandy didn’t look like someone that would work out at all. She probably had her cheerleading and that was that for exercise. That was fine though. What exercise she didn’t get from working out, she definitely got from jumping around being extremely bubbly. “Hey, so when did you want to go? All I have is this psych class and then I’m done for the day.”

Well Mandy was happy she didn’t injure his knee too much. She needed to shop and if she hurt his knee even more, he might not be able too. But he was handy dandy, so she was really happy. She did get the vibe she kind of shocked him a bit. His pat on her back was a bit, weird to say the least. Maybe she was a little too forward but she really didn’t bother to think about it. But he did work out, which she noticed earlier. But he wanted to know if she worked out, she did though, probably not as much as him but she did work out. “Well, I do jog a bit as you can see I have a whole bunch of energy to work out and jogging seems to help that.”
Rodney mentioned all he had was one more class, pretty much like her, she was pretty sure there was a question before he said something about his psych class and seemingly that was more important to her. “Oh, psych class!! That must be fascinating. So you trying to figure out my brain huh? Well I wish you luck, I sometimes don’t get myself. But that’s your only major right? Or you are majoring in something else too? Oh you know what, maybe we can mingle later when you pick me up after school. I have one more class as well”. Mandy was so caught up with wanting to know about Rodney she completely forgot his original question, but it’s just like Mandy to forget what was originally asked of her.
“SO I’ll see you later then, thank you so much”. Mandy hugged Rodney again as she kissed him on the cheek as she started walking away, though she think she may have confused Rodney a bit, she then quickly turned around and rushed back to Rodney, who was still standing there, a bit confused. “I’m so sorry, if my head wasn’t attached to my body, I swear I would forget it all over the place. We can go after class. I only have one class left as well then I’ll meet you outside. It’s better you find me, I have no idea what car you have and would probably get lost walking around the school parking lot trying to find you.” She smiled at him and explained to him how she would find her. “I’ll be standing in front of the university, looking well, like this but a bit more eager to shop”. She giggled as she tapped him on the shoulder, suggesting she was making a little joke.

Rodney thought it was so funny listening to Mandy talk. She would jump from one subject to the next without even letting him get a word in edgewise. She was answering all of his questions, but it seemed she didn’t need to hear any of his responses to her responses. She just wanted to keep talking. That was fine. Rodney could deal with her talking, after all he was normally the listener in most cases. He nodded. “Yeah, I see that,” he agreed. She did constantly have a ton of energy. Maybe some of her energy would rub off onto him. He could use some of her social skills.
When she asked if he was trying to figure out her brain, he just laughed. He thought it was hilarious that she would even think he’d attempt to do that. It was hard enough to follow everything she was saying let alone trying to understand why she was saying them. He figured her brain was always on complete overload. She had already forgotten about the main question he had asked her. He figured once she stopped talking, he’d jump in and re ask the question. She did ask him a question though which meant that her brain had stopped long enough for an answer, “well I…..” but before he was able to finish answering her question about his major, she was telling him that it would be better to mingle and talk later on when they went shopping. That was probably the best idea anyways. He was pretty sure her class started the same time his last class did which was in a matter of three minutes now.
Mandy kissed him on the cheek and began to walk off. “What about….” Mandy turned back around and quickly ran back to him. So, she hadn’t forgotten. It was so funny. It was almost like she absorbed all the information but then spewed it out whenever she had the time. “Alright, well I’ll see you then. I drive a yellow 1990 stingray corvette, so it’ll be easy to spot.” He was actually kind of excited. It would be better than sitting at home and doing homework for hours.
